Kakemono, ink on paper. japan, 19th to 20th cent.
Especially effective depiction of this winged predator sitting on a cliff , with his head riveted straight ahead with his body curved in the other direction. The beak is open showing the tongue, the eye is relentlessly sharp. Also sharp are claws, the precisely executed feathers are partly painted. Gripping imagery and workmanship within a harmoniously chosen brocade hyoso. According to information on attached paper strips on the top end of scroll, this eagle would have been done after a painting of the 15th cent. in Daitokuji (temple).
