Kakemono, ink on paper. Japan, approx. 19th cent.
Lotus blossoms are generally admired because of their beauty. In Buddhism the lotus takes a special place and stands for pureness as it grows from the mud to the light, which is also shown in this truly charming ink painting. The stem with the seed pot on its ending is rising and forms a slightly arched bow; few delicate grass grows aside. Strong black strokes for the lotus leafs to create an expressive contrast. In Buddhism in the Amida cult the lotus symbolizes “the pure country”. With some red seals.
