The piece stems from an old collection and is a rarity. The bone originates from the thigh of a cassowary and is carved into a sharp blade-form. The head of the thigh bone is surrounded by a dense net of chords with pearls as well as black feathers hanging from them. According to the collection (attached etiquette), the piece, which was also used as currency, originates from the Bismarck-Archipelago in Malaysia (see note).Note: The Bismarck-Archipelago is located in the Eastern-most part of New Guinea and was once under German occupation. The native inhabitants were headhunters.
