Ivory. China, in the style of the 17th to 18th cent.
Temple lions with a strong impression and candle holders on their backs. Sturdy built body and a bulky head. The mouths are open, showing the tongue and rows of teeth. A long thatch runs down the back of the head, the bundles of hair end in spirals. Large spirals applied to all thighs. The candleholders bear Ruyi-symbols (longevity) and the wax-bowls are carved in lotus-flower design. The saddle pads are decorated with a relief and hold rests of a former coating. The lions, including the candle holders could have once been entirely gilded. Both animals stand on newer, well-fitted pedestals, made of red huanghuali-wood.
