Bronze. Southern India, 19th cent.
A very fine rendition depicting the compassionate image of goddess Parvati, the consort of Shiva. Graceful bhanga pose with naked upper body, plenty of jewellery, one chain reaching across the breasts. The long, skintight silk skirt is flared at the bottom and chased with decorative patterns. The elevated hand holds the stem of a lotus flower (missing), the other hanging down relaxed. Parvati stands on a lotus pedestal and wears a crown. Beautiful dark-brown patina.
