Alabaster. Burma/ Myanmar, Mandalay-style, approx. 1900
The Buddha Shakyamuni standing on a conical base, wearing an Uttarasanga, which widens towards the bottom similarly to a coat, and a Samghati with a creased edge over the shoulder. Very juvenile figure, including the face. On the basis of his appearance, and also the lapidary carved creases in his clothing, this can be considered work from a rural region. Buddha holds the cape of his coat in one hand, and gestures reassurance and safety – the Abhayamudra – with the other. Distinctly tall Ushnisha without a lotus bud (as it is common for the Mandalay-style). Remains of a colour coating and rests of a former gilding on the back. Signs of age apparent.
