Okimono, ivory. Japan, 19th cent.
A somewhat puzzling, almost suggestively Chinese work. Only the strongly apparent honey-gold patina on the back reveals that the piece was used as "netsuke", as well as the carving which became "soft" through handling and the half "naturally" placed cord channel. Lan Caihe (in Japan Ransaika) counts among the Eight Immortals of China and his characteristic is the flower basket, which he holds high on a stick in both hands. However, on the back a calabash is shown out of which a cloud rises, of course with a dragon head with a big eye. According to this, the Immortal Chen Nan could also have been depicted, in Japan Chinnan. Between shoulders and dragon head on the back is the possibility for a cord channel. The well-rounded figure stands of an open-work base with gourd and leaves.
