Netsuke, ivory. Japan, HEIGHT 4,6 CM
Japan which became famous through the Noh theater play “Takasago” (see note). They are considered to be “spirits” who live in huge pine trees, especially those of Takasago in Harima. The netsuke depicts Jo on his knees and caressing the back of a minogame (the most significant long life symbol next to the crane). His wife Uba is beside him with a broom – both spent their lifetime sweeping the fallen pine needles. Jo has a rake. Especially fine carving of faces and details. Very beautiful patina! Large himotoshi pierced through the oval base (and the back of Jo), signed RYU-MIN.

Jo und Uba sind in Japan überaus popul?re Langlebenssymbole, bekannt geworden vor allem durch das No-Theaterstück “Takasago” (siehe Anm.). Sie gelten als “Geister”, die in m?chtigen Kiefern leben, insbesondere in denen bei Takasago in Harima. Das Netsuke bildet den Jo knieend ab, da er gerade den Rücken einer Minogame (neben dem Kranich wichtigstes Langlebenssymbol) streichelt. Neben ihm steht seine Frau Uba mit einem Besen in der Hand - beide haben n?mlich ihr Leben lang die herabgefallenen Nadeln gekehrt, Jo hat einen Rechen. Besonders fein geschnittene Gesichter und Details. Sehr sch?ne Patina! Gro?es Himotoshi durch die ovale Platte (und den Rücken von Jo), daneben die Signatur RYU-MIN.
