Repoussé and fire gilding. Tibet, 19th cent.
A very nicely effective, expressively powerful depiction of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, who sits in padmasana (lotus pose) with his right hand in the earth touching gesture bhumisparsha, in which he signalizes his victory over the tempter Mara, as well as the perfection of his enlightenment. Very spiritedly crafted facial features and large, curved contoured eyes, widely arched brows above and merging at bridge of the nose. Urna on the broad forehead, strongly arched ushnisha and small lotus bud as closure. Excepting coiffure, the entirely gilded repoussé figure is assembled, hands and ears were probably, as customary, casted. Ornament and spiral patterns on the seams of the monk′s robes. 凸紋錘造青銅合金释迦牟尼佛像. 西藏, 19 世紀. 高 29.5 厘米.
