Netsuke-Okimono, ivory. Japan, Meiji-period (1868 -1912)
The elephant zo is a symbol of wisdom, even perspicacity, going back to the old elephant-headed deity Ganesha from India. The elephant is an animal that can live for a long time and also epitomizes this. It is shown here lavishly decorated. The saddlecloth with plenty of blossoms, lotus-leaf wreaths and a ribbed bowl on the back. Many small different-colored inlays (some are missing), such as dangling pearl chains and a larger on the forehead. The elephant is standing on a flat rectangular platform with a central opening, which is more like a small okimono.
