Netsuke, ivory and inlays. Japan, late 19th cent.
Elaborately decorated elephant zo, a stumpy short-legged animal holding its head low. The tips of the tusks touch each other between the eyes; the trunk rests against the body. Dense relief decorations with peony blossoms and a flying crane tsuru on the saddle-cloth. Variously coloured, tiny and larger inlays made of horn, glass, etc… partially missing. Pearl rosette chord hole in the base, also the signature MASA-HARU in a reserve.
