Stucco. Thailand, Dvaravati empires, approx. 10th cent.
Very rare and early Buddha Gautama head executed in the stucco technique. A historically interesting example with notably dense facial features. Downcast gaze, the corners of the mouth are strongly indented and curved upwards, the eyes slightly protruding and the fair eyebrow line is continuous, characteristic for late Mon art. The ushnisha is conical, the hair knots buldges, the urna on the forehead is painted on (quite certainly a later appendment). Remnants of an old colour coating. Wall mounting on the back.
HEIGHT 21 CM
From a South German private collection, acquired approx. 40 to 50 years ago in Asia
Note: The art of the Dvaravati kingdoms, which were located in Northern-Central Thailand from the 6th century onwards, is also known as ?Mon art“. The final highpoint of this culture occured in Haripunjaya (near Chiang Mai), when large parts of their territory were already under Khmer control.
