Yellow bronze. India, approx. 16th to 17th cent.
A rare early votive bronze of Shiva with his hiking stick and alms bowl, the god as ascetic in the Himalaya mountains. He is also called Bhairava in this depiction, a terrifying form Shiva, and the alms bowl is the skull of the decapitated high god Brahma. Large sharp-pointed bordered halo, on which two symbols as if held up by arms are displayed, different objects are also at the bottom in front of Shiva. Further animals are depicted: The largest is the bull Nandi, the smallest a dog, a loyal companion. Strong patina, rest of cultic (red) coloring.
