Yellow bronze. India, Karnataka, presum. 11th cent.
An especially rare old bronze! In the series of the 24 Tirthankaras, also called Jina, next to the last is here depicted Parshvanatha. The last, Mahavira, was then the founder of this religious direction. In this bronze, Parshva (his nickname) sits in a wide meditation pose on a conical base, from which the Naga raises up behind his head showing her shield and seven arched cobra heads. The depiction is on a tiered square pedestal and four legs. Due to age, mellow through through handling as well as patina, some smoke patina.
