Jade. China, Liangzhu culture, c.3300-2200 BC
A very powerfully crafted, strongly expressive cong with beautiful dark patina. This work is three-leveled, with shenhui in the center, the “deity face”. The faces above and below are more simply designed. The shenhui with oval framed eyes is quite typical for Liangzhu Culture. This diagonally placed large eye field displays a fine, spirited, closely arranged pattern of lines. This is also shown on the surfaces, depicting mouth and nose as well as running through horizontal bands. These faces are on the “alcoves” and must be seen around the corners. Cong (see also in the preface about their symbolism) has a powerful stature and a very large inner opening in relationship to the height. The drilling was done from both sides and shows in the middle a typical tier due to deviation. Grey-brown to dark-brown color with fine distributed grain resulting from extreme longterm soil storage. Cong were ritual burial objects. 玉璧 - 新石器时代晚期, 铜器时代早期, 公元前2200-1900高10 厘米
HEIGHT 10 CM, DIAMETER 8.4 CM, INNER OPENING DIAMETER 6,4 CM
