Jade. China, late Neolithic, possibly Qijia culture, c.2200-1900 BC
An impressive knife in distinctive trapezoid form, the corners of the blade are especially sharp, the upper edge is lightly arched, the height of the blade on one end is shorter. Characterful are the three large openings, conically drilled from one side. The composition of colors, weathering and inner structure of this jade are altogether enthralling like a masterfully painted picture, dark thunderstorm clouds and luminous forms in between, some with expressively bizarre “dragon“ contour. The colors are from black-grey to pure white, inclusions as well as the ageing process present their own effect. The wider end is generally lighter and offers a white-grey, light yellow-brown color tone. In backlighting, the image described of this dao is even more effective, the shades run from deep black to red-brown. In addition, some strikingly vivid, strong corrosion, on the arched upper edge and openings, caused by the age and long-term storage. 玉刀 – 新石器时代晚期, 铜器时代早期, 公元前2200-1900长 32,4 厘米 -宽6,4 厘米

Accompanying this jade, is an expertise by Univ. Prof. Dr. Filippo Salviati. Also from him, is the following information about comparative examples from publicized excavations or offered from specialist literature: A knife carved in a similar shape and jade from Gallery Zacke can be seen here. Compare also a ceremonial blade dated to the early Bronze Age in The Art Institute, Chicago, which is cut from a type of jade displaying analogous variations in colour (Kate S. Buckingham Endowment, 1954.1197), here.
