Ceramic netsuke. Japan, 19th cent.
Two rare ceramic netsuke, both portraying the god of luck Hotei on his bag. Hotei was a Buddhist monk in China (Budai there) in the early 10th cent. and was active as fortune teller and weather prophet. Since he predicted future events, he was eventually seen to be the incarnation of the Buddha of the Future Maitreya. He carried with him in his bag everything he needed to survive. Both netsuke show him happily laughing with his big bare belly and a fan. The larger piece has small damaged places at end of the bag and on the fan. Himotoshi respectively through the hollow bag.
