Netsuke, ivory. Japan, 19th cent.
Kanzan was a hermit on the "Cold Mountain". In China he is called Hanshan (= Kanzan). He wrote* and fastened his written verses on trees. He is usually shown with his companion Jittoku, whom he is reading to from a scroll. He is, however, alone in this nice compact netsuke, sitting on the floor and holding out the open scroll in front of him. His face radiates a fitting spirited expression. Fine robe pattern, good patina, himotoshi through buttocks.
