Miniature painting with colors. India, around 1800
Parasurama, "Rama with the axe Parasu”, is one of the many incarnations of the god Vishnu. Actually Parasurama was a Brahman hermit who had a white cow named Sabala, which granted every wish. The king absolutely wanted to have it, sent his most beautiful wife to convince the hermit (Parasurama) who was not there at the time. Instead his father Jamadagnya (depicted right above) was present, disagreed and was killed. Thus Parasurama sweared revenge and killed the king with his axe. Rama is seen with 27 arms in this miniature – each hand wielding a weapon and amputated arms already on the ground. In the background, the white cow Sabala is jumping merrily. Five little ducks, only as relief (!) in silvery water in the foreground. Good condition, in passe-partout, on back is a longer text.
