Sandstone. Cambodia, Old Khmer Empire, around 10th cent.
According to its age alone, this is a very rare mid-sized sculpture. The full-breasted goddess with naked torso down to her navel wears a long elegantly draped sarong with fishtail pleat, typical for Khmer style and that wavy section, emerging in the lateral belt area. In expression and posture, a proud head with crown and cylindrical chignon, altogether quite emphasized through its verticality. Since the attributes (and arms) are missing, we can only presume that this depicts the goddess Uma, a wife on the Hindu high god Shiva. In the sculptural art of Khmer, Uma was the most beloved female deity motif in the period indicated. Condition in accordance with age, with patina. Mounted on tiered wooden base.
HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE) 71 CM, WITH 83,3 CM
