Wood, lacquer relief and gilding. China, Qing Dynasty
This quite singular and interesting sculpture offers a richly dressed noble lady on a throne, depicted in the manner of "ancestor pictures". The decorative elements are composed in a compact, lightly raised, fine lacquer relief with gilding, the motifs are blossoms, clouds, moon or sun, waves, spirals. A boy holding a bowl sits on her lap. The head of the lady clearly emanates royal expression, the hair is partly real and stands out humorously. The feet are tiny and rest on lions. According to its abundant smoke patina, this sculpture stood in a house altar and was certainly worshipped as an "ancestor" in the form of "Guanyin bringing children". Good condition, traces of age. 木鑲金加漆雕仕女帶童座像。中國,清代。高31 厘米。
