Wood with gilding, inlays. Burma, Mandalay, approx. 19th cent.
In this size and quality, a very rare sculpture of a "resting" Buddha in typical Mandalay style. The head formation is noteable, which depicts a determined character also showing the gentle strength of introspection. The eyes of Buddha Shakyamuni are not only effectively inlaid, they also offer subtle psychic animation. As known for the Mandalay style, "royal" self-perception is here expressively combined with dignified serenity. The body is youthful, flexible and supple. One arm is leaning on a pedestal, the other rests on the upper body contour until over the hips. The legs are in parallel to the ground. Although a monk′s robe, the clothing is fitting for a prince, due to the lavish jewelry (colorful inlays with glass). The diadem is also decorated, the tall ushnisha is characterfully defined. According to tradition, this reclining Buddha is termed "resting". Strictly iconographical, however, this is the Buddha Parinirvana, the "dying" Buddha. Within Buddhism a huge event, as Buddha ended his cycle of countless rebirths to join "eternity" forever in transcendent Absoluteness. Seen purely historical, Buddha was old, not a young man anymore. And when he "dissolved", he was surrounded by his students, Arhat... The decorative relief on seams and samghati is in thayo technique with lacquer made from the lacquer tree. Inlay technique is called hmanzi shwecha, jade green and ruby red inlays were made, especially in the stylized lotus blossoms. Further relief is composed of floral tendrils. Almost complete gilding.
