Miniature painting with colours. India, Pahari style, 19th cent.
An interesting small painting with a rare motif. The naked blue skinned deity Shiva on a long hexagonal pedestal. She is wearing jewellery, a white snake around the neck, has long golden hair and a third eye. Devi is sitting on Shiva’s lower abdomen, luxuriously clothed with a crown, halo and attributes. Shiva embodies calmness and permanence and the female Devi (form of a mother-goddess and can also be Shiva’s consort), which can also be described as Shakti, a minifestation of primordial female energy required to unfold the male creative potential. Very fine details.
