Indian ink and paint on silk. Korea, Choson, 19th century.
Bizarre, jagged jutting cliff out of which yellow chrysanthemums and grey washed bamboo are growing. On the lowest level, two cats are lying peacefully together, the front is white with black spots, the other somewhat larger one is grey with tiger stripes. From the very top, a green leafy branch appears on which a sparrow is perched and another has just landed. The motif cats-sparrows was apparently a popular one, a well-known painting is from Pyon Sang-byok, while the theme was naturally often varied. Left above, a long, two-lined calligraphic bordered inscription. Altogether good condition of this painting done in literati style, with passepartout and framed.
