Grey stone or cast stone. Nepal, 19th cent.
Depictions of the standing Manjushri are rare. This Buddhist Boddhisatva is a protector of Science and especially important to Nepal, since he rid the Kathmandu valley of the monsters that previously occupied it with his sword. The Khadga sword is depicted on the lotus to the left, the book Pustaka on the right. The hand gesture is the Dharmacakra mudra. Remarkable about this stele, is the beautiful, bronze-like lacquer on the Boddhisatva.
