Wood and lacquer technique with gold and inlays. Japan, 19th cent.
Qualitatively very good and subtle work in maki-e technique on carved wood. The boy is vividly depicted; his posture, legs, the smiling face and creases in his clothing. The carving is entirely coated with black lacquer embellished in maki-e technique with gold kirikane (cut gold leaf applications) as well as applied miniature pearl elements. The vaulted bottom side executed with rebate holds a gold nashiji as well as a long red collector’s artikelnumber (a long articlenumber such as this is typical for museums, rather than private collectors). This work was originally the cover of a vessel. Small bruises, one leg missing. With fitted four-legged base with irregular countour.
LENGTH (WITHOUT BASE) 4,6 CM
From an old Munich collection
