Nestuke okimono, painted wood. Japan, 19th cent.
Stylistically very typical work for the Shuzan Nagamachi or one of his followers. Fuku-roku-ju, whose name already aforementions the work’s symbolism (luck-prosperity-longevity), is depicted with his characteristic overly elongated head and a large leaf fan that has a “life-awakening” function. The Fukujin (lucky god) wears noble Chinese attire, is bearded and has long ears with thick earlobes. The painting is ornamental and partly executed with applications and gilding. The signature SHU-ZAN on the back is coloured red.
