Bronze. Nepal, approx. 18th to 19th cent.
An especially carefully crafted bronze sculpture! Shakyamuni sits on a lotus throne in padmasana (lotus pose) and touches the earth with one hand in the so-called bhumisparsha mudra, sign of his victory over Mara. Finely designed facial features with lowered eyes, urna on the forehead, a little lotus bud on the ushnisha. Detachable halo with dynamic flaming relief, the upper section as "flaming juwel" cintamani. Strong patina, rest of old lacquer painting.
