This lovely antique (c.1910) Impressionistic/tonalist oil painting still life of roses and petunias in a painted vase has a fabulous, rich appearance. In the background we can see the silhouette of the figurine of a standing woman. The painting is a symphony of deep and harmonious colors, but the application of the paint is both energetic and avant-garde (for 1910). The artist scraped away paint in several areas to create highlights and interesting impressionistic textures. This attention to surface details foreshadows, or perhaps shows an awareness of, the work of abstract painters who were about to achieve stardom.
The painting is loosely signed, and the artist's name appears as Emma Carlsund. There also may be the date 1912 below the signature. A label on the back of the stretcher identifies the painting as coming from the tony Foster Brothers Art and Frame Gallery in Boston.
There is a stable and pronounced craquelure across the canvas. In the photographs this is most evident in the upper left. In normal lighting, it is less obvious. The painting has been professionally cleaned and re-varnished to bring out the colors. A decision was made to leave the craquelure, as it enhances the aged quality of the work.
The current frame is new, custom made for this painting.
The canvas is 16"x18". Outer frame size is 22"x20"
