WEIGHT 32.4 kg

Provenance: Van Zuylen van Nyevelt Family Collection, Kasteel de Haar, Haarzuilens, Utrecht, Netherlands. Christie's, Kasteel de Haar, 13 October 1998, lot 95 (sold for GBP 11,532 or approx. EUR 26,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). The back inscribed with an old lacquered inventory number, ‘135’. Kasteel de Haar, near Utrecht, was inherited by Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt in the late 19th century. Originally belonging to the de Haar family, the castle passed to the van Zuylen family in 1440 when the last male de Haar heir died childless. In 1887, he married the French author Baroness Hélène de Rothschild, who played a key role in its twenty-year restoration. The castle fell into disrepair and ruin until the baroness used her family resources to finance its full reconstruction in neo-Gothic style. The castle was transformed into a lavish residence, with interiors furnished with pieces from the Rothschild collection, including Chinese porcelain, Japanese ceramics, old master paintings, and Flemish tapestries. The contents of Kasteel de Haar were sold at Christie's in 1998 in a highly successful sale that attracted considerable attention at the time.
Condition: Very good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities, remnants of pigment and dark varnish, minimal warping, few minute losses.

The votive inscription refers to Minamoto Yoshisada (also known as Nitta Yoshisada, 1301-1338), a prominent samurai lord and head of the Nitta clan. In 1333, Yoshisada played a crucial role in the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate by leading a decisive military campaign that led to its overthrow. The Sogen-ji Temple, a historically significant site, was established in 1188 by the Nitta clan in Ota, Gunma. This temple stands as a testament to the Nitta family's influence and legacy during the Kamakura period.
