WATANABE OMI: A VERY FINE BRONZE FIGURE OF KANNON, 17TH CENTURY

By Watanabe Omi (1646-1704), signed Doi Hokkyo saku
Japan, late 17th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Cast in two parts, the figure depicts Kannon seated in dhyanasana (meditative posture) on a lotus dais, with one hand raised in prithvi mudra (earth-touching gesture) and the other holding a water flask (kundika) carved from stained antler. The loose robe falls elegantly over the feet, and the serene expression of the face is complemented by a subtle smile. The head is downcast, framed by a tall chignon and flanked by pendulous earlobes, adding to the figure’s meditative and tranquil aura.

Inscriptions: Signed underneath the figure and to the top of the base Doi Hokkyo saku [made by Doi Hokkyo].

HEIGHT 17 cm
WEIGHT 1.1 kg

Provenance: From an American private collection in New York.
Condition: Excellent condition. Minor expected surface wear and typical casting irregularities.

Watanabe Omi (1646-1704) was the son of the renowned Japanese metal caster Omi Daijo Minamoto Shoji. His bronze casting works, though rarely seen, are highly regarded for their quality and craftsmanship. Watanabe Omi is also known for signing some of his works “Doi Hokkyo”, a title traditionally granted to accomplished artists in the Buddhist art world.
