A FINE GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF AMIDA NYORAI, 18TH CENTURY

Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of yosegi (joined) construction, finely carved standing in samabhanga atop a lotus dais with the hands held in raigo-in, wearing a loose-fitting robe cascading in voluminous folds covered in gilt lacquer and opening at the chest. The serene face sensitively modeled with downcast eyes inlaid in crystal painted with black pupils ringed in red, bow-shaped lips framed by a painted mustache, flanked by pierced pendulous lobes, the forehead inlaid with a crystal byakugo (urna), the hair arranged in small, snail-shaped spiral curls (rahotsu) over the ushnisha centered by a crystal-inlaid jewel.

HEIGHT 36.3 cm (the figure), 41.5 cm (incl. lotus dais), and 46 cm (incl. stand)

Provenance: Sydney L. Moss Ltd., London, by 1978. A distinguished private collection in London, United Kingdom, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice from Sydney L. Moss, dated 14 November 1978 and confirming the dating above, accompanies this lot.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, obvious losses, few minor age cracks, typical rubbing, flaking, and minor losses to gilt and lacquer.

Mounted on an associated wood stand of rectangular form.

Amida is the principal Buddha in Pure Land Buddhism, also called the Buddha of Infinite Light. In Vajrayana tradition, he is known for his magnetizing discernment, pure perception and deep awareness of the emptiness of all phenomena. According to scriptures, he possesses infinite merit resulting from good deeds over countless past lives as a bodhisattva.

Compare a closely related earlier gilt-lacquered wood figure of Amida, dated Muromachi period, 15th or 16th century, 58.4 cm high incl. base, in the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, object number 88.002.158.

Compare a related larger figure of Amida lacking most of the gilding of the present lot, dated Edo period, 17th/18th century, 97.8 cm high, at Christie's, Japanese Art and Design, 16 November 2000, London, lot 191 (sold for GBP 35,200 or approx. EUR 71,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
