A FINE AND LARGE (77 CM) GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF AMIDA NYORAI, 18TH CENTURY

Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of yosegi (joined) construction, superbly carved to depict Amida standing in samabhanga with his hands held in raigo-in, wearing a loose-fitting robe opening at the chest and cascading in voluminous folds, the serene face sensitively modeled with downcast eyes inlaid with inside-painted crystal, elegantly arched brows centered by a crystal-inlaid byakugo (urna), and slender bow-shaped lips forming a subtle smile framed by a neatly painted mustache, flanked by pierced pendulous lobes, the hair arranged in tight curls over the ushnisha with a crystal-inlaid nikkeishu (jewel of wisdom).

Amida stands atop two lotus pods encircled by overlapping petals raised on a compressed cloud-decorated base over a band of foliage, all supported on an elaborate tiered octagonal base with two balustrades and decorated with lotus leaves and petals, foliate designs, and brocade and geometric motifs. The deity is backed by a richly carved cloud-form kogai (aureole) with lotiform halo.

Provenance: Perret et fils et Vibert, Paris, France (label to back of base). Hans Heinrich Josef Meyer (1858-1929), Leipzig, Germany, acquired from the above and thence by family descent. The back of the kogai with remnants of an old label. Perret et fils et Vibert was a renowned Parisian design house founded by Alfred Perret in 1879. In 1885, Alfred Perret’s son, Alfred Perret Jr., and Ernest Vibert joined the firm, which became known for its Asian-inspired bamboo and rattan furniture, and from 1887 additionally Chinese and Japanese works of art. The firm’s prestigious clientele included the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Montpensier, the Vanderbilt family, Queen Amélie of Portugal, and Marshal Yamagata of Japan. Hans Heinrich Josef Meyer (1858-1929) was a German geographer and explorer, best known for being the first to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The son of publisher Herrmann Julius Meyer (1826-1909), Hans’s early travels, including a journey to East Asia in 1882, were financed by his father. In 1885, Meyer joined his father’s publishing firm, while continuing to embark on extensive expeditions worldwide, ultimately achieving his historic ascent of Kilimanjaro.
Condition: Good condition and presenting beautifully. Expected age cracks and losses, some with old repairs and touchups, most notably to the kohai and to one arm and sleeve, the hands are likely re-lacquered. Minor chips to the base and minor old repairs to the lotus petals.

HEIGHT 39.7 cm (the figure), 77 cm (total)
