ROKKO: A SUPERB SILVER-INLAID BRONZE ‘COCKATOO’ VASE

Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of ovoid shape, gently tapering toward the short foot and surmounted by a waisted neck with an everted rim, the body finely decorated with gold, silver, and shibuichi takazogan and incision work. A cockatoo is perched on a hannoki (alder) tree branch, gently scratching its body. The body of the bird is crafted in silver, with the legs and beak in shibuichi. The lively eye of the cockatoo is highlighted with a gilt ring. The surface is finely hammered, and a silver and copper insert is included for holding flowers. The base is sealed with the artist’s mark ROKKO.

Condition: Excellent condition with minor surface wear, casting irregularites, and few light scratches to the base.

With a wood base for presentation.
