JOMI EISUKE II: A SUPERB INLAID BRONZE ‘FULL MOON RISING ABOVE A PINE GROVE’ VASE

By Jomi Eisuke II (1839-1899), sealed Jomi
Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of tall baluster form, finely cast, the body is intricately decorated in takazogan with a continuous design of pines on the slope of a hill, their dark forms rendered in shakudo inlays. The full moon, inlaid in silver, rises from behind the trees, casting a soft, ethereal shadow over the pine grove, enhancing the drama of the scene. The hills below the pines are rendered with a mist-like texture, their surface expertly wrought to suggest the fading light of the setting sun. The deep-red bronze of the vase beautifully mirrors the warm, muted tones of the evening, evoking a serene and contemplative atmosphere. This piece is a masterpiece of both material mastery and observational artistry, capturing the delicate interplay of light and shadow in nature. The base bears the seal mark JOMI.
