YAMAMOTO JUNMIN: A FINE BRONZE OKIMONO OF TWO SLEEPY PUPPIES

By Yamamoto Junmin (1888-1962), signed Junmin in
Japan, c. 1930s, Showa period (1926-1989)

Finely cast as two curled up puppies, one fast asleep, while the other rests with its head raised, exhibiting a calm expression detailed with droopy ears. The texture of the fur is meticulously engraved. Signed underneath within a rectangular reserve JUNMIN in [seal of Junmin].

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and casting irregularities.

Yamamoto Junmin (1888-1962), active in Nara, was trained at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he studied under the bronze sculptors Asakura Fumio and Katori Hozuma. He established his career through regular participation in the principal government-sponsored exhibitions, first gaining acceptance at the 9th Teiten in 1928 and subsequently exhibiting at successive Teiten, Bunten, and Shin-Bunten shows throughout the 1930s and early 1940s. Following the Pacific War, he continued to exhibit frequently at the Nitten exhibitions, maintaining an active presence from 1946 through the mid-1950s.
