TSUDA SHINOBU: A BRONZE OKIMONO OF TWO MICE ON BARLEY

Japan, c. 1935-1940, Showa period (1926-1989)

Finely cast in bronze of a rich chocolate-brown color, this piece depicts two rats nestled among cut stalks of barley. One rat emerges from beneath the barley, while the other rests atop, their faces delicately detailed with circular eyes and pointed noses and one detailed with a long, sinuous tail. Signed to the side of the base DAIJU saku [made by Daiju].

Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear.

Tsuda Shinobu (1875-1946) was a prominent metal artist of the early twentieth century. A graduate of the Tokyo School of Art in 1900, he began showcasing his work in 1907. Shinobu's international recognition grew after his participation as both a juror and exhibitor at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. He was twice honored with formal decorations by the French government and received numerous prestigious appointments in Japan, cementing his status as one of the leading figures in Japanese metalwork. From 1927 to 1946, he was an exhibitor at the Teiten national salon and its subsequent iterations.
