The kaiken, or kimono tanto, is a small dagger historically carried by both men and women of the samurai class in Japan. Initially designed for self-defense in close quarters where longer swords like the katana and wakizashi were unwieldy, it was often carried discreetly, tucked in a kimono sleeve or pocket. Women, in particular, carried it for self-defense and for ritual suicide. The kaiken was also concealed by the lower classes who were prohibited from carrying swords, and by criminals in the Edo period. Today, the kaiken is primarily a ceremonial accessory in sumo wrestling, worn by referees at the highest ranks.
