Showa kanoto-u toshi shoto kichijitsu, Kanzan shirusu [By Minamoto Masao, the length of the blade is 6-sun (18.18 cm), this is recorded by (Sato) Kanzan, on an auspicious date in the early winter of the Showa 50 (1975)], and with a label inscribed, ‘Minamoto Masao, Kanzan NBTHK’.

Minamoto Masao was the pupil of Minamoto Kiyomaru (1813-1854), the greatest of all shinshinto smiths, whose standing was such that he became known as 'The Yotsuya Masamune' during his period of working in Edo. Masao continued this tradition and produced swords in the Soshu style. He was an ardent imperialist and it is said that he always intended for his swords to be used by the imperial faction, who opposed the rule of the Tokugawa shoguns. He is believed to have made swords only from the 1850s up to 1866, just before the Meiji Restoration of 1868.
