During the Sengoku period (late 15th to late 16th century), the Takada school was renowned for producing swords for feudal lords throughout Kyushu Island. The reputation of Takada blades rivaled that of the famed Mino and Bizen schools, two of the most prestigious sword forging regions in Japan. This exceptional craftsmanship and forging technique were passed down through generations, continuing into the Edo period, where it influenced subsequent swordsmiths.

The artist of the tsuba, Hamano Naoyuki (born 1754), also known as Gaiundo Naoyuki, is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p.1360 (H 06907.0). He was a prolific artist who at the young age of 20 became a student of Hamano Noriyuki and later of Iwama Masayoshi.
