MASAMORI: A FINE KATANA IN KOSHIRAE, WITH NBTHK TOKUBETSU (ESPECIALLY PRECIOUS) CERTIFICATE

By Masamori, signed Takada ju Masamori saku
Japan, Kyushu, dated 1556, Muromachi period (1333-1573)

The katana with a NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Token (especially worthy of preservation) certificate, no. 1011263, dated 23 May Reiwa first year [2019], with two images of the tang, and the seal of the NBTHK. Further accompanied by a registration certificate (torokusho), registration no. 30746.

The blade:
Sugata (shape): shinogi zukuri, iori mune, torii-zori, ko-kissaki
Hamon (temper line): sugu with sunagashi
Hada (forging grain pattern): itame
Boshi (tip): yakizume
Nakago (tang): ubu (not shortened), haagari-jiri, the yasurime is katte sagari, two mekugi ana
Mei/Uramei (signature): Takada ju Masamori saku [Masamori, resident of Takada] (mei), Koji ninen hachigatsu hi [a day in the eighth month of the ninth year in the Koji era, corresponding to 1556] (uramei)

The mounting:
Habaki (blade collar): copper
Tsuba (sword guard): of marugata form, with shakudo plugged kogai and kozuka hitsu ana, iron with takabori dragon and gold nunomezogan, signed Jakushi
Fuchi-kashira (handle fittings): iron with takabori dragon amid clouds and gold takazogan eyes, the fuchi signed ‘Goshu Hikone ju, Soheishi Soten sei [made by Soheishi Soten, resident in Hikone, Omi Province]
Tsuka (handle): with an original Koto era tsuka-ito, samegawa (rayskin), shakudo, two large shibuichi and gold takazogan menuki with samurai riding a horse and dragon
Saya (sheath): mottled red and black lacquer with silver hirazogan barafuji ni igeta mon from the Katakura clan and shibuichi sayajiri, dark horn kurigata

NAGASA 78.3 cm (blade length), SORI 2.8 cm (curvature)
LENGTH 98.3 cm (blade and tang), 117 cm (koshirae), 108.5 cm (shirasaya)

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few fukure, some kitae ware, and few cut marks to the mune and shinogi. The koshirae saya with minor surface wear, few fine cracks around the kurigata, and the kurigata with few small chips. The tsuka with an original tsuka-ito with insect activity and minor associated losses.

The artist of the fuchi was Soten I or II, who is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 1780 (H 08942.0 and H 08943.0).

The tsuba was made by Jakushi, there are several Jakushi listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 423-424 (H 02012.0 – H 02016.0)
