MIYASHITA TOSHINORI: A FINE IRON ‘MAGICAL FOX’ TSUBA

By Miyashita Toshinori (1830-1897), signed Miyashita Toshinori and kakihan
Japan, 19th century, Edo (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912)

Of kakumarugata form, with a kozuka hitsu ana, finely inlaid in gold, silver, and shakudo hirazogan and takazogan, some details worked in katakiribori, depicting a sly fox looking over his shoulders beside a stream. The reverse featuring grasses with dew drops. Signed to one side Toshinori with kakihan.

HEIGHT 6.5 cm, LENGTH 5.5 cm, 2.2 cm (the nakago), WIDTH 0.5 cm (the mimi), 0.4 cm (the seppa-dai)

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and areas of corrosion.

With a padded storage box lacquered in black and gold with an Imperial kiku emblem.

Miyashita Toshinori (1830-1897) is listed in Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 2065 (H 10531.0). He was the student of Tanaka Kiyotoshi.
