Signed in gold takamaki-e KOMA KANSAI.

The Koma school ranks among the most celebrated lineages of Japanese lacquer artists, founded in Edo during the 17th century by Kyui, who is recorded as having produced inro for Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. For over two centuries, successive generations served as official lacquerers to the court and shogunate, establishing a legacy of exceptional refinement and technical mastery. While best known for inro, members of the school produced a wide range of lacquer objects.

Koma Kansai is regarded as one of the most accomplished masters of the lineage, noted for his versatility and sophisticated use of decorative techniques. There were at least two artists working under the name Kansai, and numerous followers and pupils who also signed works Koma Kansai.

Tengu were considered the embodiment of powerful and usually malevolent spirits who, in Japanese folk beliefs, inhabit the woodlands of high mountains. There are two principal forms of tengu: the karasu tengu and konoha tengu. They are typically represented as having human bodies, wings, and sometimes talons in place of hands and feet. The karasu tengu has a birdlike head complete with a strong, sharp beak. The konoha tengu has a human face, distorted by an enormously long nose.
