AN EXCEPTIONAL AND RARE CERAMIC ‘QUAIL CAGE’ KORO (INCENSE BURNER)

Japan, 19th century, late Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved and molded as a pair of quails, the present incense burner is raised on a tripod base decorated with painted grasses and clouds. The group is surmounted by a tall woven cage entwined with millet. One of the quails features a detachable head, forming the incense compartment, and is pierced with three apertures to allow the smoke to escape. The surface is richly embellished with vibrant enamels and gilt, imparting a refined and polychrome finish.

HEIGHT 28.5 cm, DIAMETER 27 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and few typical firing irregularities. The removable bird head with a chip to one opening, and old gold-lacquered 'kintsugi' repairs to another opening and to the beak.

Quails are associated with courage, reflecting their role in rural China where quail fighting, akin to cockfighting, was a popular pastime. At the same time, the quail (‘an’), a homophone for ‘peace’, conveys auspicious connotations of harmony and tranquility, and by extension symbolizes peaceful coexistence among generations.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related Kutani ware figure of a hawk on a rock, dated third quarter of the 19th century, 25.1 cm tall, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number 1122-1875.
