A VIVID AO-ORIBE CERAMIC ‘HERON AMID REEDS’ SQUARE MUKOZUKE (FOOD SERVING DISH)

Japan, late Edo period (1615-1868)

Boldly modeled, this rectangular dish features a flat base and straight sides. The surface is decorated with a deep green glaze, characteristic of Ao-Oribe, framing a scene of a stylized heron standing in calm waters amidst windblown reeds. The heron, executed in the zen ink painting style, is rendered in iron-brown brushstrokes against a cream-glazed ground, evoking the dynamic simplicity of traditional ink art. The underside reveals the kiln support points through several rounded unglazed spots, exposing the buff-colored ceramic body beneath.

LENGTH 17.9 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor surface wear and typical firing-inherent irregularities.

Mino high-fired ceramics were produced in the Mino and Seto regions (present-day Gifu Prefecture) during the late 16th century. Among the four principal Mino styles, Oribe ware became the most celebrated, named after the tea master and warlord Furuta Oribe (1591-1615). Oribe ware is known for its bold colors and asymmetrical designs, representing a dynamic expression of Japanese tea ceramics. Emerging during the Momoyama period (1573-1615), a time of political and social upheaval, Oribe ware marked a departure from the refined restraint of earlier traditions and embraced a new visual vitality that echoed the energy of the era.

Ao-Oribe (literally “green Oribe”) refers to pieces partially covered with green copper glaze, with the remaining surfaces decorated in iron-glaze motifs. The green glaze, created by combining copper salts with feldspathic glaze and wood ash, was applied using dipping, trailing, or ladling techniques, rather than brushing. Authentic Oribe ware was fired in irregularly oxidizing atmospheres, which were achievable only in the imperfectly constructed kilns of ancient times. The resultant variegated green glaze became one of the most visually distinctive features of Oribe ceramics.

Typically used in the tea ceremony, a square dish like this would hold fish, with the decoration gradually revealed as the meal progressed.

Museum comparison:
Compare a closely related Oribe ware square mukozuke (serving dish) with bird design, Edo to Meiji period, 19th century, 21 cm long, in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, accession number B67P8.
