He was the son of Goto Sadayuki (1850–1903), famous for his horse sculptures, and studied under Takamura Koun (1852–1934), inheriting the character 光. After graduating from the Tokyo University of Fine Art, he developed a unique style, creating wooden carvings and cast bronze (copper alloy) figurines, often focusing on animals such as horses and elephants.
