? A LARGE AND UNUSUAL WOOD OKIMONO OF THREE TOADS

Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Charmingly carved to depict three toads stacked one atop the other in a playful vertical composition. The largest toad crouches at the base, its bulging eyes and textured skin naturalistically rendered, supporting a second toad climbing across its back, while a smaller toad perches at the top. The eyes are finely painted, and each figure is executed with notable attention to detail and a strong sense of humor.

HEIGHT 27.5 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear and few natural age cracks, the largest to the base which has been stabilized with two wooden plugs. Old repairs to several toes of the lowest toad.

The playful composition of the present carving may well draw inspiration from the celebrated Choju jinbutsu giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals), a 12th to 13th century masterpiece depicting animals such as frogs, rabbits, and monkeys engaged in lively, human-like activities. Renowned for their humor, dynamic movement, and expressive characterization, these scrolls frequently show animals wrestling, playing, and celebrating in animated scenes. Similarly, the stacked toads in this okimono convey a sense of vitality and interaction, echoing the whimsical spirit of these early narrative paintings.
