A RARE AND EARLY LACQUER ‘BONSAI AND SPIDERWEB’ SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX)

Japan, late 16th-early 17th century, Momoyama (1573-1615) to early Edo period (1615-1868)

Of almost square form with canted edges, the surface bearing a silver cloud ground finely decorated in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The kabusebuta (overhanging) lid depicts a bonsai tree, delicately embellished with kirigane flakes, set upon an oval stand with three curved feet and chrysanthemum (kiku) decoration. Behind the tree, a small pheasant perches atop a rock, adding a subtle auspicious element. The edges of the lid are encircled by a finely executed scrolling foliage band.

The interior of the lid and box are finished in nashiji and decorated in gold hiramaki-e with two finely rendered spider webs inhabited by two spiders. The interior is fitted with a removable tray decorated with autumn grasses and a removable baseboard (ita), housing the original implements: a simple copper water dropper (suiteki), and an inkstone (suzuri).

SIZE 4 x 22.5 x 21.7 cm

Condition: Good conditon with old wear including a few tiny dents and nicks to the cover, and one large crack to the interior cover. Scratches and wear to the underside.

Compare a related lacquer suzuribako depicting a bonsai tree, attributed to the Igarashi school, dated 17th-early 18th century, 20.1 cm long, at Christie’s, Aesthetic Intuition: Collecting Japanese Art in Post-War London, 11 November 2015, lot 134 (sold GBP 9,375 or approx. EUR 15,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
