A FINE LACQUER ‘SHISHI AND CRANES’ SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX)

Japan, 17th century, early Edo period (1615-1868)

Published: Henri L. Joly and Kumasaku Tomita (1915), Japanese Art and Handicrafts, in aid of the British Red Cross, no. 29 (not illustrated).

Exhibited: British Red Cross, Japanese Works of Art and Handicraft, London, 14 October-13 November 1915.

Of rectangular form with canted edges, finely decorated in gold, silver, and red takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a dense nashiji ground. The kabusebuta (overhanging) lid is boldly composed with a prancing shishi, its speckled coat, curling mane, and animated tail rendered with lively precision and subtle textural variation.

The interior of the lid reveals a contrasting and elegant scene of two red-crowned cranes, finely lacquered and set against a nashiji ground with fundame rims. The interior is fitted with a removable tray decorated with autumn grasses and a removable baseboard (ita), housing the original implements: a silvered metal plum-shaped water dropper (suiteki) and an inkstone (suzuri).

SIZE 4.5 x 23.4 x 20.7 cm

Provenance: Ex-Collection of Richard Phené Spiers. Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 6 November 2014, London, lot 284. From a French private collection, acquired from the above. With an exhibition label to the interior. Richard Phené Spiers (1838-1916) was a distinguished English architect, educator, author and painter born in Oxford in 1838 who played a central role in British architectural education during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Trained at King’s College London and the école des Beaux?Arts in Paris, Spiers brought Continental influences to his own practice. Beyond architecture, he was an accomplished draughtsman, art collector and watercolorist whose views of European and Eastern monuments were widely exhibited. Spiers donated many works of art, including fine examples of Japanese lacquer, to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Condition: Very good condition with only very minor wear and light traces of use including some very light soiling and tiny nicks to the cover.

The present box was exhibited at the 1915 British Red Cross exhibition, Japanese Works of Art and Handicraft, an important event organized to raise funds for wartime relief efforts. The exhibition brought together a remarkable selection of Japanese works, including lacquer, ceramics, textiles, and prints, offering British audiences a rare opportunity to engage with the refinement and technical excellence of Japanese craftsmanship. Such events played a significant role in fostering the appreciation of Japanese art in Europe during the early 20th century.
