A MAGNIFICENT GOLD-LACQUER ‘CHERRY BLOSSOMS’ HANAMI SAGE-JUBAKO (PORTABLE PICNIC SET FOR CHERRY BLOSSOM VIEWING)

Japan, late 19th century, late Edo period (1615-1868) to early Meiji period (1868-1912)

Exquisitely crafted in lacquered wood, composed of a rectangular frame enclosing a principal square body formed by four stackable units, accompanied by two lacquered-metal tokkuri flasks, each with a pear-shaped body, slender waisted neck, and distinctive flared mouth, fitted onto an elongated lower compartment containing various accoutrements for the picnic. The upper section of the structure houses two shelves, one supporting a large square tray and the other an elongated container with a set of five similarly shaped trays. The top of the portable basket fitted with a silver lobed carrying handle.

The exterior of the basket exhibiting overall a finely polished dark brown lacquer ground, beautifully sprinkled with gold and silver powders of varying thickness, exquisitely decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, accented with gold kirigane flakes, to depict the lush branches of various Sakura trees in full bloom, mirroring the function of this sublime set. The interior of the basket, as well as each container and small tray, is finished in a striking vermilion-red lacquer, with the latter further adorned with gold hiramaki-e paulownia and millet crests and with gold fundame rims.

Condition: Excellent condition with only minor surface wear and light traces of handling and use with occasional minuscule losses to lacquer along the corners, as is to be expected from this type.

With a wood storage box.

Hanami, or ‘flower viewing’, designates the longstanding Japanese custom of appreciating the transient beauty of blossoms. In this context, the term most commonly refers to cherry blossoms (sakura), and more rarely to plum blossoms (ume). From late March to early May, cherry trees come into bloom across much of Japan. The annual cherry blossom front forecast, issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency, is closely followed, as the blossoms typically remain at their peak for only one to two weeks.

Sets such as the present lot would have facilitated the transport of food, utensils, and other requisites for outdoor gatherings among members of the late Edo-period elite. They supported the organization of carefully staged occasions in which participants could partake in seasonal leisure while observing newly opened cherry blossoms, a moment that signals the early renewal of the natural world after winter.

Auction comparison:
